The real cost behind signalproof clothing or why silver matters

The real cost behind signalproof clothing or why silver matters

If you have ever wondered why silver is used in signalproof textiles, or why the price of silver-containing clothing can vary over time, the answer begins with a simple fact: silver is not just a precious metal. It is also an exceptionally useful industrial material, valued for its electrical conductivity and other properties that make it suitable for a wide range of advanced applications, including electronics, solar technology and conductive textiles.

At SHIELD, silver is an important part of the technology behind many of our products. We choose materials based on how they perform as part of a real garment, not simply on their price per kilogram. A signalproof garment needs to function as clothing first: it needs to be flexible, comfortable, durable, suitable for everyday use and, depending on the product, suitable for prolonged contact with the skin. At the same time, its conductive structure needs to provide effective shielding performance.

This combination of requirements makes material selection considerably more complicated than simply asking which metal is the cheapest.

Our prices reflect the real cost of materials

Like any company working with raw materials, SHIELD is influenced by the global market. Silver and other materials used in our products have their own supply, demand and price dynamics, and when the underlying cost of these materials changes significantly, the economics of producing silver-containing textiles naturally change as well.

This isn't about suddenly positioning SHIELD as a more expensive or luxury brand. It is simply the reality of working with valuable raw materials whose market prices can move substantially over time. We believe it is better to explain this openly than to hide the reasons behind product pricing.

At the same time, we continuously work to keep our products as affordable as reasonably possible. We don't automatically pass every increase in our costs directly to customers, because our philosophy has always been to find the best possible balance between quality, shielding performance, comfort, design, durability and affordability.

SHIELD remains competitively priced

There is another important part of the picture that is sometimes overlooked. Even when compared with the wider international market for signalproof and EMF-protective clothing, SHIELD remains competitively priced. Specialist signalproof clothing can be significantly more expensive in different parts of the world, particularly in the US and UK.

We deliberately don't name individual brands or products here. Prices alone don't tell the whole story because materials, textile construction, testing methods, product specifications and business models can differ considerably. The important point is that SHIELD is not positioned at the top end of the market simply because our products contain silver.

Our objective has always been to offer the best balance we can between the quality of the materials, shielding performance, comfort, design, durability and price. That philosophy has not changed.

Why don't we simply replace silver with a cheaper metal?

This is one of the questions we hear most often, particularly as the price of silver has increased. Copper, stainless steel and other conductive materials can certainly be used in textiles, so the question is reasonable. However, choosing a material for clothing is very different from choosing a material for an electronic component.

A garment has to bend and move with the body, remain comfortable, withstand moisture and sweat, survive repeated everyday use and function properly within a textile construction. For garments that are worn directly against the body, the suitability of the material for prolonged skin contact is another consideration. Electrical conductivity is therefore only one part of the equation.

Silver offers a particularly attractive combination of electrical conductivity, textile compatibility and suitability for functional garments. This does not mean that other metals cannot be used in clothing, or that they have no advantages. Rather, each alternative brings its own technical compromises. For SHIELD, the question is therefore not simply, "What is the cheapest conductive metal?" It is, "What material gives us the best overall balance for a garment that people can comfortably wear every day?"

That distinction is important.

The percentage of silver doesn't tell the whole story

Another common misconception is that a higher percentage of silver automatically means better shielding. It doesn't. The performance of a conductive textile depends on much more than the amount of metal present. The type of conductive fiber or yarn, the way it is incorporated into the fabric, the construction of the textile, the continuity of the conductive network and the overall garment design can all influence the final result.

Ultimately, what matters is the measured shielding performance of the resulting textile or garment. This is why we encourage customers to look beyond simple statements such as "this fabric contains X% silver." The more meaningful question is how the finished material actually performs.

This is also why SHIELD places importance on technical information and testing rather than relying simply on the name of a material or the amount of silver it contains.

Look beyond the marketing

The growing interest in EMF-protective products has created a rapidly expanding market, and with that growth has come a great deal of marketing language. Consumers will encounter descriptions such as "advanced shielding technology," "maximum protection," "proprietary technology," "next-generation fabrics" and extremely high protection percentages.

These statements can sound impressive, but they don't necessarily tell you how a product actually performs. When comparing signalproof products, we believe customers should ask more practical questions: What frequencies were tested? What was the measured attenuation in dB? Was the fabric or the finished garment tested? Who performed the test? Is the testing independently documented? Under what conditions was it performed?

These questions are considerably more useful than simply comparing marketing claims.

At SHIELD, we believe technical information should come before marketing hype. We don't want customers to choose a product because a headline sounds impressive. We want them to understand what they are buying and why.

We don't want to sell fear

There is a reason we try to keep our communication factual. We could make much stronger marketing claims, use fear to sell products or tell customers that they need protection from everything around them. But that isn't the kind of brand we want SHIELD to be.

We prefer to explain the technology, provide the technical information available to us and help customers understand the capabilities and limitations of the products they are considering. We believe an informed customer is more valuable than a frightened customer, and that transparency creates a much stronger relationship in the long term.

This approach is particularly important in a market where technical expertise and marketing language can sometimes become difficult to distinguish.

Part of the SHIELD price is something you cannot see

There is another part of the value of a SHIELD product that isn't immediately visible when comparing two prices online: our customer service.

SHIELD is a family-run business. When you contact us, there is a real person behind the response. We answer customer questions, help people choose the right product, explain technical details and assist with sizing, washing, delivery and other practical matters. When a customer has a problem, we don't simply point them towards an automated FAQ. We try to find a solution.

Sometimes that means investigating a technical question. Sometimes it requires communication with our production partners. Sometimes it means discussing an individual situation and finding the most appropriate solution. That personal approach requires time and attention, but it is an important part of what SHIELD is.

We believe every customer deserves an answer. Whether the question is simple or highly technical, we try to respond and help wherever we can. That level of personal customer care is part of the real cost of running SHIELD, but it is also part of what makes us different.

Family-run doesn't mean small ambitions

SHIELD may be a family-run business, but our customers are global. People from more than 90 countries have chosen our products, which means that we compete internationally every day with companies that are often much larger than we are and have substantially larger marketing budgets.

We also compete in a market where premium positioning and sophisticated marketing can sometimes make a product appear more technically advanced than the available evidence actually demonstrates. Our response is different. We want our products to speak for themselves through good materials, thoughtful construction, testing, design and responsive customer service.

We don't want to compete simply by making the biggest claims or spending the most on marketing. We want customers to understand what is behind the product and why it is priced the way it is.

We will always look for better alternatives

Our use of silver does not mean that we will never use another material. We continuously look at new textile technologies and conductive materials. If we find a material that provides an equal or better combination of shielding performance, comfort, durability, wash resistance, textile compatibility, skin-contact suitability and affordability, we will seriously consider it.

We are not loyal to silver simply because it is silver. We are loyal to the quality and performance our customers expect from SHIELD.

Our philosophy hasn't changed

The price of silver can change. So can the price of energy, manufacturing, transportation and other inputs. Exchange rates can change as well. These are realities that every manufacturer has to deal with, and we cannot control global commodity markets.

What we can control is how we respond. We can continue looking for better materials and manufacturing solutions, continue to absorb costs where possible, continue to keep our products competitively priced and continue to provide something that is increasingly difficult to find: personal, responsive customer service from a real family-run company.

That has been the philosophy behind SHIELD from the beginning. We don't want to be the cheapest brand, the loudest brand or the brand making the biggest marketing claims. We want to make high-quality signalproof clothing, explain what is behind it, and give our customers the best value we can while keeping the business sustainable for the people behind it.

Silver is more expensive than it used to be, and the global market for metals continues to evolve. We don't hide that. We simply believe that when you understand the material, the technology, the market and the people behind the product, you can better understand the price — and, ultimately, the value of what you are buying.
